Every once in a while, the Austin food news feed serves up something that has absolutely nothing to do with single-origin pour-overs or cold brew on nitro — and today is one of those days. A sushi concept with Austin roots is making waves in Washington D.C., which, while undeniably exciting for the broader Austin culinary scene, falls a little outside our wheelhouse here at Austin Coffee Showdown.
That said, it does remind us of something worth celebrating: Austin's food and drink culture as a whole is punching well above its weight class. The same creative energy that sends Austin chefs conquering new markets is alive and well in our local coffee scene, where independent roasters and specialty cafés continue to push boundaries on sourcing, sustainability, and sheer brewing craftsmanship.
So while we tip our hats to Austin's sushi ambassadors making their D.C. debut, we'll keep our eyes firmly on the espresso bar. Whether it's a new micro-roastery popping up in East Austin, a café experimenting with anaerobic fermentation processes, or a barista comp champion opening their first brick-and-mortar, there is no shortage of coffee stories worth telling in this city.
Stay tuned — we've got our ear to the grinder, and the Austin coffee scene never stays quiet for long.
