The one number to memorize. Weigh your coffee and your water — a 1:16 ratio (say, 22 g of grounds to 350 g of water) is the starting point every barista on our list works from. A cheap kitchen scale does more for your cup than any machine. Adjust to taste from there: tighter (1:15) for bolder, looser (1:17) for lighter.

Two recipes that cover 90% of home mornings.

Pour-over · V60 · ~3 min

The clean cup

  1. 22 g coffee, medium grind. 350 g water at 200°F.
  2. Rinse the filter, add grounds, tare the scale.
  3. Pour 50 g, wait 30 s (the "bloom").
  4. Pour in slow circles to 350 g total.
  5. Done when it finishes dripping (~2:30–3:00).
French press · ~5 min

The forgiving cup

  1. 30 g coffee, coarse grind. 480 g water at 200°F.
  2. Add grounds, pour all the water, stir once.
  3. Cap it, wait 4 minutes.
  4. Press slowly, all the way down.
  5. Pour it all out now (sitting = bitter).

FAQ

What's the single best upgrade for home coffee?

A scale, then a burr grinder. Weighing your coffee and water fixes inconsistency instantly, and a burr grinder (like the Baratza Encore) makes an even grind that a blade grinder never will. Together they matter more than any brewer or machine.
